Your Lying Eyes is the new name of Billy’s metal project, which has its roots in some songs he wrote during his undergraduate studies of Latin and Greek, his time playing with Restraint, and his Thomas J. Watson Fellowship travels. After The Gnarboots disbanded and Billy stopped playing with Repeater, Billy began practicing his existing metal songs and writing new ones with Evan Chapman. At some point, they recorded Evan’s drum parts together, but Billy never finished the recordings, or the bass and vocal arrangements for most of the songs.

After a serious hard drive crash, a serious car crash, a few years of physical therapy, and various international travels, language classes, and major life events, Billy began digging up the drum tracks in 2020, with the expectation to complete the arrangements and recordings after finishing A Mystery to Me’s upcoming album, Once Upon a Time in High School. As with that project, the expectation is to complete recording and mixing a full album’s worth of material by mid-2021 (hopefully sooner), though the album name has not been decided yet.

As for the name of the band, it was inspired by the saying, “Who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes?” as it succinctly captures the zeitgeist of the 21st Century, when people are being asked to affirm such obvious falsehoods as the idea that men can be women, violent riots are peaceful protests, and killing a person not only does not harm them, but can even be an act of love.
